After the summer holidays, schools across Tamil Nadu reopened on June 2, marking the end of a much-needed break. With June nearing its end, students and parents are now looking ahead to July to see if any extended holidays are in store.
In Tamil Nadu, public examinations for primary, middle, and higher secondary school students were held between March and April 24. The summer vacation followed immediately, giving students a well-deserved break.
Initially, due to the intense heat, there were expectations that the reopening of schools would be delayed until the second week of June. However, as temperatures eased, the School Education Department confirmed that government schools would resume on June 2, and students returned to class on that date.
Many students are now curious about when their next stretch of holidays would come. Unfortunately, this year’s Bakrid festival fell on a Saturday, meaning no extra day off.
Looking ahead to July, there is only one public holiday on the calendar, Muharram, which falls on Sunday, July 6. Since it coincides with a weekend, students and teachers are disappointed that it does not translate into an extended break.

There is, however, a slight chance of relief if the crescent moon marking Muharram is sighted a day later. The holiday may shift to Monday, July 7. In that case, a short break might still be on the cards, bringing a smile to students’ faces.
