Prem Sagar Wants To Make Ramayana With A Fresh Perspective

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana remains a cult show, and even the present generation enjoys its simple narrative. Now, his son, Prem Sagar, is aiming to revisit the epic in his own style and present a new Ramayana. He aims to bring a new perspective to the historic tale. Recently, in an interview, Prem Sagar shared about the current status of the project and also revealed that he has not yet found the ideal Ram.

In conversation with ETimes, Prem Sagar addressed the difficulties he might face while making this new show after the legendary series made by Ramanand Sagar. He stated, “It’s going to be a huge challenge because people are bound to compare it.” However, Prem Sagar told the publication that the Ramayana they are creating is not the one his father made. He mentioned that the same Ramayana cannot be created and that it would be unwise to alter the legendary show.

Instead, they are exploring other options, such as the epic narrative, which can be told from the perspectives of Sita, Hanuman, or Ramayan’s most devoted bhakt, Kakbhushundi. Sharing about his other ideas into exploring the epic, he said that, for instance, when Ravan died in the story, his sister Surpanaka could break into a tandav dancing and laughing that her brother had passed away. The maker described that even the audiences will be left shocked “Because very few people know that Ravan had killed Shurpanakha’s husband. So, this will be a revelation for them. Ramayan has all Navrasas.”

Speaking about who he wants and Ram on his show, Prem Sagar said, “Our team is working day and night to find the right Ram. We will announce it as soon as we find one. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. I’m open to a new Ram. I’m open to somebody who’s never acted as a Ram. But I must get Ram which is in my mind. Ram is a Vishnu avatar who doesn’t show anywhere that I am God.” He informed that his team is looking on social media and elsewhere for the one who can be Ram. Shedding more light into the making of this show, Prem Sagar revealed that he wants to work hands-on and is aiming to have episodic directors.

Prem Sagar added that the former Ram and Sita from Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhalia might have a role to play in the new series as well.
